Keeping your budgie healthy starts with simple, regular routines. This checklist makes it easy to stay on top of your bird’s care, spot problems early, and give them the best chance at a long, happy life.

Check these every day during feeding and cleaning:
🟢 Bright, clear eyes
🟢 Clean nostrils (no crust or discharge)
🟢 Smooth breathing (no wheezing, clicking, or tail bobbing)
🟢 Fluffy, clean feathers (no constant fluffing or patchy areas)
🟢 Alert and active behavior
🟢 Eating and drinking normally
🟢 Normal droppings (firm, dark with a white cap)
🟢 Clean vent (no poop stuck to feathers)
🧼 Change cage liner or paper
🧼 Wash and refill food & water bowls
🧼 Remove uneaten fresh food
🧼 Wipe up messes under perches and near bowls
🪶 Check nails and beak for overgrowth
🪶 Check feet for redness, swelling, or pressure sores
🪶 Rotate or clean toys to prevent boredom and bacteria
🧽 Wash perches and cage bars with bird-safe cleaner
🥬 Offer new veggies or safe treats to encourage diet variety
🧠 Track any small behavior or eating changes
⚖️ Weigh your budgie (if possible) to spot early weight loss
🩺 Inspect feathers for mites or bald spots
🧼 Deep-clean entire cage and accessories
🩻 Book a vet check-up once a year (or more often if breeding/sick)
🪹 Check for breeding behavior if you have pairs
💧 Watch hydration and room temp during hot months
🌬️ Avoid cold drafts and fumes in cooler seasons
If you notice any of the following, contact an avian vet immediately:
Fluffed up all day and sitting still
No eating or drinking for more than 12 hours
Trouble breathing or tail bobbing
Bleeding, injury, or broken feather
Watery or green poop
Sudden behavior change (very quiet or very aggressive)
