Discover the must-have supplies to ensure your budgie has a safe and comfortable environment. From food to toys, this page covers all the essentials.
Getting ready to bring home a budgie? Whether youβre a first-time budgie owner or adding to your flock, having the right supplies makes a huge difference in your budgieβs health, happiness, and confidence.
Your budgieβs cage is their home, so size and safety matter.
Must-have features:
Spacious: At least 60cm wide x 45cm deep x 45cm high for 1β2 budgies
Safe bar spacing: No wider than 1.2cm
Horizontal bars: For easy climbing
Easy to clean: With a removable tray
π’ Tip: The bigger the cage, the happier the budgie!
Budgies spend a lot of time standing and climbing, so they need good-quality perches.
Best types:
Natural wooden perches (like gumtree or manzanita)
Different thicknesses and textures to help their feet stay healthy
Rope perches for variety (bird-safe only)
π Avoid: Smooth plastic or sandpaper-covered perches β they can hurt their feet.
Budgies need clean, easy-access bowls for their daily meals.
Separate bowls for seed, pellets, fresh foods, and water
Choose ones that clip onto the cage to prevent tipping
Clean and refill every day
A healthy budgie diet includes more than just seeds!
Essentials:
High-quality seed mix or pellets made for budgies
Fresh vegetables (like spinach, carrot, capsicum, broccoli)
Fruits (as a treat) like apple, berries or banana
Millet spray for training or bonding
Fresh water daily
π Never feed: chocolate, avocado, onion, garlic, caffeine, alcohol
Budgies are smart and playful! Toys keep them mentally active and prevent boredom.
Great toys include:
Swings and ropes
Shredding toys made from paper or bird-safe wood
Mirrors (in moderation β some budgies get too attached)
Foraging toys to encourage natural behavior
π‘ Rotate toys weekly to keep things fresh and fun!
These are super important for:
Beak health β helps them grind and keep their beak trimmed
Calcium β especially for breeding birds or young budgies
Hang it on the cage wall where they can easily reach it.
Line the bottom of your cage with:
Newspaper
Paper towel
Bird-safe cage liners
Avoid sandpaper or anything rough.
Change it every 1β2 days to keep the cage clean.
Budgies love to bathe!
Use a shallow dish of clean, lukewarm water
You can also mist them lightly with water (some love it!)
Bathing helps keep feathers clean and skin healthy
π Offer a bath a few times a week, especially during warmer months.
Budgies sleep best in darkness and quiet. A light cloth cage cover helps:
Reduce noise and drafts
Let them know itβs bedtime
Prevent night frights
π―οΈ Some owners also use a night light to help nervous budgies feel safe at night.
These arenβt must-haves, but theyβre very useful:
Travel carrier for vet visits or pickups
Play stand for out-of-cage time
Food storage bins to keep seed and pellets fresh
First-aid kit (with styptic powder, saline, tweezers, etc.)
