A properly set-up cage is essential for your budgie’s well-being. This guide walks you through everything from cage size to the ideal layout and essential accessories.
Bringing a budgie into your life is exciting — but before your new feathered friend arrives, it’s important to set up their cage the right way. A well-set-up cage keeps your budgie safe, healthy, and entertained. It’s not just a cage — it’s their home, their playground, and their comfort zone.
Budgies are active birds that love to fly and climb. Bigger is always better when it comes to cages.
Look for:
Horizontal space over vertical (budgies fly side to side, not up and down!)
Minimum size for 1–2 budgies: 60cm long x 45cm wide x 45cm high — but the bigger, the better!
Bar spacing: No more than 1.2cm apart so they don’t get stuck
Safe materials: Powder-coated or stainless steel cages (avoid rust or sharp edges)
Tip: If you have more than 2 budgies, go even bigger or consider a small indoor aviary.
Where you put your budgie’s cage is just as important as what goes in it!
Ideal locations:
Indoors, away from windows with direct sun or cold drafts
Near where the family hangs out (budgies love company!)
Against a wall or corner — this helps them feel secure
Not too high or too low — eye level is perfect
Avoid:
Kitchens (fumes and heat are dangerous)
Laundry areas (steam, noise, and chemicals)
Bathrooms (humidity and water risks)
Your budgie’s cage should be comfy, clean, and fun! Here’s what you’ll need:
✅ Perches
Use natural wooden perches of different thicknesses (like gumtree branches)
Avoid all smooth plastic perches — they can cause foot problems
Place perches at different heights but not directly above food/water
✅ Food & Water Bowls
Use separate bowls for seed/pellets, water, and fresh foods
Clean water should be given daily
Place them low enough for easy access but not on the cage floor
✅ Toys
Budgies are super smart and need stimulation!
Swings, bells, ladders, shredding toys, foraging toys
Rotate toys weekly to prevent boredom
Don’t overcrowd — leave space to fly!
✅ Cuttlebone / Mineral Block
Provides calcium and keeps their beak healthy
A clean cage = a healthy budgie.
Daily:
Change water
Remove leftover fresh food
Check floor tray
Weekly:
Replace paper liner or clean tray
Wash food/water bowls with warm soapy water
Clean toys and perches if needed
Monthly:
Deep clean the entire cage with bird-safe cleaner or diluted vinegar
Cage cover: Helps them sleep better at night
Floor mat: To catch mess and make cleaning easier
Night light: If your budgie gets night frights
Bath: Many budgies love to bathe in a shallow bowl or bird bath
Make sure your budgie has at least 4–6 hours a day of interaction and out-of-cage time (in a safe, bird-proofed room). A budgie with freedom and attention is a happy budgie!
Setting up your budgie’s cage properly is one of the most important steps in giving your bird a safe, happy start in your home. It doesn’t have to be fancy — just clean, safe, and fun. Your budgie will thank you with cheerful chirps, playful flying, and lots of personality!
