Water is just as important as food. This page covers how to keep your budgie hydrated and the best practices for water changes.
Water is one of the most important parts of your budgie’s health. Proper hydration helps with digestion, feather condition, temperature regulation, and overall wellbeing.
Here’s what you need to know about keeping your budgie well-hydrated every day.
Budgies need access to clean, fresh water at all times.
Change water at least once or twice daily
Use a clean water bowl or a bird-safe water bottle
Rinse the container daily to prevent bacteria buildup
Avoid letting water sit so long that it becomes dirty or stale
Use room temperature water — cold water can shock their system
Avoid tap water with chlorine or additives if possible — use filtered or bottled water if your tap water is harsh
Never add vitamins or supplements to their water unless directed by an avian vet
Fresh vegetables and fruits provide extra moisture
Budgies may also enjoy occasional misting or bathing to stay hydrated through their skin and feathers
Don’t leave water containers dirty or contaminated
Avoid water bowls placed directly under perches where droppings can fall in
Never use sugary drinks, milk, or juice — only plain water!
Always check your budgie’s water supply before leaving the house or overnight. Dehydration can happen quickly, especially in hot weather or if your budgie is unwell.
