Establishing a consistent feeding schedule is key to your budgie’s nutrition. Learn how often to feed your bird and the best practices for portion control.
Budgies are active all day and need regular access to food and water to stay healthy and energetic. A simple, balanced feeding routine makes sure they get all the nutrients they need — without overfeeding or underfeeding.
This feeding schedule works for single pet budgies, pairs, or small aviaries. Once it becomes a routine, it’s quick, easy, and helps your budgie feel safe and well cared for.
This is the most important feeding time!
✅ Fresh seed or pellets
Refill with a clean portion of budgie seed mix or pellets
If you use both, go for half seed / half pellet mix to balance energy and nutrition
✅ Fresh vegetables
Add a small portion of chopped or grated veggies (like carrot, spinach, corn, or broccoli)
Remove leftovers after 2–3 hours so they don’t spoil
✅ Clean water
Refill with fresh, cool water every morning
🟢 Tip: You can also offer veggies in the evening instead, especially in hot weather when they spoil faster.
This isn’t a must-do, but great for enrichment or training!
✅ Small treat or foraging food
Millet spray, a berry, or a piece of fruit
Use it for bonding, training, or hiding inside a foraging toy
🟠 Fruit should only be offered 2–3 times per week, and in tiny amounts.
A quick check before bedtime helps keep your budgie healthy overnight.
✅ Top up seed or pellet mix if needed
Budgies may nibble early in the morning or before sleeping
Make sure there’s enough food left in the bowl (not just shells)
✅ Change water if it’s dirty
✅ Remove any uneaten fresh food
Especially if you offered fruit or veggies in the afternoon
Once or twice a week, add some extra nutrition:
🥚 A small piece of boiled egg (for protein)
🥄 Sprinkle a few chia, hemp or flax seeds
🌿 Try new veggies like kale, beet greens, or zucchini
🪨 Make sure your budgie always has a cuttlebone or mineral block
Always monitor your budgie’s weight and droppings — changes can signal health issues
Use shallow bowls so they can see and reach their food easily
Don’t just refill bowls — check that there’s actual food left, not just husks
Introduce new foods slowly and give your budgie time to try them
